NHS publishes performance, diagnostics and wait-time statistics for April 2022

NHS England has published performance statistics for April 2022.

The consultant-led Referral to Treatment Waiting Times data for April 2022 can be found here, and the relevant press release here.

  • At the end of April 2022, 61.7% of patients waiting to start treatment were waiting up to 18 weeks, thus not meeting the 92% standard.
  • The number of RTT patients waiting to start treatment at the end of April 2022 was 6.5 million patients. Of those, 323,093 patients were waiting more than 52 weeks and 12,735 patients were waiting more than 104 weeks.
  • For patients waiting to start treatment at the end of April 2022, the median waiting time was 12.6 weeks. The 92nd percentile waiting time was 45.0 weeks.
  • During April 2022, 1,495,909 patients started a new RTT pathway.
  • During April 2022, 233,919 RTT patients started admitted treatment and 942,179 started non-admitted treatment.

  • The total number of patients waiting six weeks or more from referral for one of the 15 key diagnostic tests at the end of April 2022 was 439,800. This was 28.4% of the total number of patients waiting at the end of the month.
  • Nationally, the operational standard of less than 1% of patients waiting six weeks or more was not met this month.
  • Compared with April 2021 the total number of patients waiting six weeks or more increased by 128,500 while the proportion of patients waiting six weeks or more increased by 4.4 percentage points.
  • In the last 12 months, the proportion of patients waiting six weeks or more at the end of a month has varied between 22.3% (May 2021) and 30.0% (January 2022).
  • The estimated average time that a patient had been waiting for a diagnostic test was 3.5 weeks at the end of April 2022.
  • There were 1,547,000 patients waiting for a key diagnostic test at the end of April 2022. This is an increase of 253,500 from April 2021.
  • A total of 1,850,900 diagnostic tests were undertaken in April 2022. This is an increase of 3,400 from April 2021.

  • 79.1% of people were seen by a specialist within two weeks of an urgent referral for suspected cancer. This is a decrease from March 2022, which was 80.6%.
  • 92.8% of people treated began first definitive treatment within 31 days of receiving their diagnosis. This is a decrease from March 2022, which was 93.3%.
  • 65.2% of people treated began first definitive treatment within 62 days of being urgently referred for suspected cancer. This is a decrease from March 2022, which was 67.4%.
  • 77.8% of patients began first definitive treatment within 62 days of a consultant’s decision to upgrade their priority. This is an increase from March 2022, which was 77.1%.
