The British In Vitro Diagnostic Association (BIVDA) is delighted to confirm the appointment of Helen Dent as Chief Executive, following a successful period as Interim Chief Executive. Helen will lead BIVDA in championing the medical diagnostics industry to politicians, policymakers, media and relevant stakeholders and in supporting members to improve patient outcomes.

Helen’s first act as Chief Executive was to launch BIVDA’s new strategy at the organisation’s annual general meeting last Wednesday. The new strategy focuses on the 4Is – to drive investment and innovation in the medical diagnostics industry, and to inspire and influence the sector.

Helen, who previously spent over three years as Chief Operating Officer (COO) at BIVDA, brings over twenty years of industry experience to the business. Prior to joining BIVDA, she worked at a senior level at Abbott Diagnostics in the UK and Europe. She has experience as National Contracts Manager at NHS Blood and Transplant, Pharmacy Buyer for Surrey and Sussex NHS Supply Management Confederation and the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency. She holds a Masters Degree in Procurement Law and Policy and a Masters in Strategic Procurement.

Speaking about her appointment, Helen said; “I'm thrilled to embark on this new role and lead BIVDA in shaping policy and delivering our new strategy at this crucial time for our members. It's my priority to ensure members’ voices are not only heard, but also magnified to senior figures across the Government and NHS. Moreover, I am committed to advancing the understanding and adoption of medical diagnostic testing, to ultimately enhance patient outcome.”

Helen Tucker, Chair of BIVDA’s Executive Board said; “The board and I are delighted Helen is now officially BIVDA Chief Executive after such a successful period as interim. She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the industry with her, not just from her COO role with BIVDA, but from her previous roles. The board looks forward to working with Helen to drive the work of BIVDA forwards.”

About BIVDA

BIVDA is the national industry association for manufacturers and distributors of medical diagnostic tests in the UK, representing more than 220 organisations. Its members employ more than 20,000 people, contribute billions of pounds in UK exports, and help the NHS to deliver 1.6 billion tests each year, which save lives, improve patient outcomes and reduces pressure on frontline services.

Approximately 85% of clinical pathways involve diagnostic tests, but less than 1% of the NHS’ budget is dedicated to the uptake of new and innovative medical diagnostic products. Effectively used, medical diagnostics help to reduce hospital stays, support patients to look after their own health and release resources for use elsewhere in the NHS, resulting in a healthier population and stronger economic growth.
