Dedicated COVID-19 lab opened in Wales

As part of the Welsh strategy of NHS Test and Trace, there will be a dedicated COVID-19 testing laboratory established in Cardiff. This is due to a collaboration between Public Health Wales and diagnostics company PerkinElmer. The University Hospital of Wales will be the new site for these testing efforts which will bolster the country’s capacity to deliver prompt testing services which form the basis of effective Test and Trace practice. Life Sciences Hub Wales issued a call-to-action among the industry to which PerkinElmer responded. The PerkinElmer team identified the necessary resources for the lab and specified the particular equipment and test materials needed to set up such a facility.

Ken Skates, Welsh Government Minister for Economy, Transport and North Wales, said: “The response of businesses across Wales to support our efforts in beating coronavirus has been truly remarkable.” The scaling up of COVID-19 diagnostics remains a key part of the Test and Trace strategy outlined by the Welsh Government although they have to date struggled to reach the levels of testing seen across the border in England, with mounting questions regarding their approach.
