UK continues to lag behind the European market for in-vitro diagnostic expenditure
MedTech Europe have announced the publication of their annual IVD Market Statistics Report 2017, a comprehensive compilation of market estimates covering the IVD industry in Europe. The 2017 figures include macroeconomic and healthcare expenditure data for all 28 Member States, as well as for the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) members.
The report highlights the differences in total healthcare expenditure, both in relative terms to GDP and absolute amounts, and the wide variations in IVD per capita expenditure across Europe, with the UK lagging a long way behind its neighbours.
Despite a relatively strong growth of 2% for the UK IVD market in 2017, IVD per capita expenditure ranked 22nd out of the thirty-one countries included in the report. The UK spent only £12 per capita on IVD products in 2017, approximately half the IVD per capita expenditure in Italy and Germany and about two-thirds that of France.
Doris-Ann Williams, Chief Executive of BIVDA, said: “Supporting a wider and more rapid uptake of diagnostic tests can not only make a dramatic difference to patients’ health, but also improve quality and allow for NHS resources to be utilised much more effectively. However, much more needs to be done to fully harness the potential and maximise the value of IVDs in the UK.”
John Bagshaw, Chair of BIVDA’s Market Dynamics Working Party, said: “As the report clearly shows, spending per capita on IVDs in the UK is one of the lowest in Europe, while performance against a number of health care outcomes also lags behind. Particularly at a time of significant advances in science and technology, removal of barriers to the adoption of innovative IVDs, such as silo budgeting, would help improve outcomes in a highly cost-effective manner.”
