ABOUT BIVDA

Helen is the CEO at BIVDA, appointed in March 2024.

Helen comes from a procurement background and has held roles at NHS PASA in pharmaceutical purchasing and childhood vaccines, as well as pharmacy and diagnostics procurement for Surrey and Sussex Confederation, and National Contracts Manager for laboratory goods at NHSBT.

Helen worked for 11 years in a number of roles across the UK and Europe at Abbott, leading supplier management and contract provision for managed services.

She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, has an MSC in Strategic Procurement from the University of Glamorgan Business School, and an LLM in Public Procurement Law and Policy from the University of Nottingham, School of Law.

Angela is an inspirational leader who previously worked in the NHS for over 42 years, as the UK’s Deputy Chief Scientific Officer (DCSO) and in Genetics and Genomics, as the Scientific Director of a Regional Genomics Service and Clinical Programme Director of the NW Coast Genomic Medicine Centre.

She retired from her DCSO post for NHS England in October 2023, after holding the position for 5 years. Angela took up the role of President of BIVDA in December 2024. She is an influential, collaborative team leader with a proven record in Clinical Research, Medical Education, Mentoring and Coaching in Life Sciences.

Angela has strong financial acumen and is a strategic leadership expert. She is passionate about quality assurance, safety and regulation in Science and in particular Genetics and Genomics. She graduated from University College London and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and an honorary Fellow of the Academy for Healthcare Science.

She had the pleasure of being the President of the BSGM, Chairman of the Royal College of Pathologist’s Genetics and Reproductive Medicines Specialist Advisory Committee and was RCPath’s Scientific Lead before taking on the role of DCSO.

She is a qualified coach and mentor. In 2014, she was named as one of HSJ's top 50 Inspirational Women. In 2015, she was awarded NHS Healthcare Scientist of the Year, and in 2016, was honoured in Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours List as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for Research and Mentoring Students.

In 2019, she was included in the Pathologist Power list as one of the top 100 trailblazers. In 2021, Angela was approved as an Honorary Fellow of IPEM. In 2023, the AHCS again recognised her contribution to education and training with a second Fellowship.

In the same year, Angela was nominated as a Woman of the Year by the Women Leaders Network. She is an inclusive, compassionate and kind leader with broad experience of working across the healthcare system, and in all her endeavours strives to bring out the best in all whom she works with.

Richard possesses over two decades of experience in working in and supporting the healthcare industry and is currently a General Manager at Werfen. Richard has been a longstanding BIVDA supporter during his career, joining the BIVDA board in 2019 and has chaired the Procurement Working Party since 2018. Richard has been Chair of BIVDA since 2025.

Jag is the CEO of Septest. He joined the BIVDA board in 2004 and is past Chair and current Treasurer.

He has worked in the medical diagnostics and life science industry for over 28 years having started out as a Clinical Biochemist in the NHS.

In 1995 he joined Beckman Instruments where he developed a career spanning 15 years in sales and marketing before joining Serco Health where he helped create the first joint venture within UK pathology between Serco and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. 

John gained a degree in Microbiology at Bristol University before joining Avon Medicals as Company Microbiologist. After a switch to clinical sales with Beckman Instruments, he developed his career in IVD sales and marketing with Technicon then VITEK Systems before joining bioMerieux, where he worked for over twenty years.

Now independently working as JAB Associates, John has served on the board of BIVDA for a number of years, and for a few months stood in as COO while a new recruit was found for that position. He has managed the BIVDA Market Audit for a decade, and represents BIVDA on the Market Research Committee for MedTech Europe.

Dr Kam Pooni has a distinguished career spanning over two decades in the life sciences industry, with a track record of driving strategic growth and supporting emerging founders and technologies. He also holds posts as CEO of Glyconics, sits on the Board of the Southampton Science Park and is a Royal Society Entrepreneur-in-Residence (Life Sciences) at the University of Southampton.

Darren started out in the labs working for the NHS with a Haematology and Transfusion science background, but quickly transitioned to the industry where he shifted focus to Haemostasis. He has 30 years of industry experience ranging from sales through R&D to class leading service provision.
 
Darren has been a firm supporter of BIVDA for many years, participating in and filling the position of vice chair for the Regulatory Affairs Working Party before standing for the board first as a board member then as Chair for the “Covid” years, helping guide external stakeholders and our industry through some of its most challenging years. Darren stepped down as chair in 2022 but remains an active board member.

Outside of work, Darren is a family man, married for over 25 years with 2 sons, and he is an avid reader and a keen motorcyclist (don’t get him talking about this!). 

Alastair has 25 years of experience in the medical diagnostics industry including both NHS laboratories and international experience within commercial organisations. He brings enthusiasm for and knowledge of the market we operate in and a deep commitment to advancing the field of diagnostics. His career has been marked by significant achievements in sales leadership, market development, and strategic planning.

Currently, he serves as the Cluster Director for QuidelOrtho in the UK, Ireland and Nordics. QuidelOrtho has a varied portfolio operating across both established lines of business such as immunohematology and clinical labs as well as less well-established areas such as POC and molecular diagnostics.

QuidelOrtho also has a significant manufacturing footprint in the UK, operating from Pencoed, providing him with a perspective of the challenges faced by UK based companies looking to manufacture and export. He is committed to ensuring that BIVDA continues to represent all sectors and sizes of the IVD world and offer the most relevant representation possible.

Vice President and General Manager UK&Ireland

Since leaving university Paul has spent 30 years in the IVD industry, first as a Biomedical Scientist (Haematology and Blood Transfusion), through levels of NHS Operational and Strategic Management and then into commercial roles in the supplier side of the IVD business.

He has worked for three IVD organisations , DiaMed, Roche and now with bioMerieux. He has had multiple roles (in the UK and internationally) of increasing seniority from Product Specialist, through Business Development, Marketing and Sales Leadership into his current role as VP and GM of bioMerieux UK & Ireland.

Country Business Manager - UKI Diagnostics, Hologic

As the Diagnostics Country Manager for Hologic, I lead the UKI diagnostics division in Women’s Health, driving commercial strategy, market growth, and innovation in the molecular diagnostics sector. With extensive experience in the commercial sector, I have navigated the challenges of bringing cutting-edge innovations to market, working closely with healthcare providers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders.  

I am committed to strengthening BIVDA’s influence by advocating for industry needs, shaping policies, and ensuring that diagnostics businesses of all sizes have the support they need to thrive. My leadership experience, deep sector knowledge, and ability to bridge perspectives across the industry will help BIVDA continue to drive meaningful impact for its members and advance the UK diagnostics sector for the benefit of patients, healthcare providers, and the wider healthcare system.

I am also currently participating and part of the Diagnostics Advisory Board with a key focus on driving change in the landscape of NHS Pan Pathology tenders, with a goal of ensuring equitable and fair procurement processes for both suppliers and Trusts.

For the future vision of BIVDA and the contributions I hope to make, a key focus area will be Women’s Health diagnostics and a potential programme focused on improving diagnostic outcomes.

As a BIVDA Executive Board member I hope to provide an innovative approach to how the current landscape can be shaped, for a better diagnostics future for our patients and members.

Country Manager and Director for the UK, Ireland, and Nordics, Diasorin

I have 26 years' commercial experience, including commercial and marketing experiences in POCT and core lab diagnostics, with job and life experience outside the UK market overseas in the USA and Denmark in former roles.

I have spent virtually my entire working career in IVDs from the laboratorian to supplier. I have a deep passion for the role of diagnostics in clinical application and its value in everyone's healthcare journey. 

I am honoured to receive the support of the BIVDA membership with my election to the board and plan to add to BIVDA with my experience, knowledge and passion for all things IVD, and my current perspective from a mid-sized IVD supplier in the UK market.

Michael Worth

Country Manager - UK, Ireland & Nordics, Molecular Diagnostics at Abbott

Michael has worked in the diagnostics industry for over thirty years, starting his commercial career at Murex Diagnostics before joining Roche Diagnostics.

Since June 2000, Michael has worked for Abbott, working up through roles of increasing seniority to his current role as Country Manager.

During his time in the industry, he has observed the many changes that have occurred from the advent of Managed Service Contracts to formation of the Pathology Networks in England and the opportunities and challenges that these have brought. 

He sees BIVDA as an important stakeholder to support industry and advocate for a vibrant IVD sector to allow all companies to thrive.

He is a strong believer in employee development at all levels and is the executive sponsor for the Advancing Professionals Network at Abbott.

Michael was delighted to be appointed to the BIVDA board and looks forward to supporting the work of BIVDA to highlight the key role that in vitro diagnostics play in the health of the UK population.

Business Lead Diagnostics, Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Ltd

Stewart has been in a Diagnostics leadership role covering the UK Market for over a decade. He has been responsible for the UK Market for Siemens Healthineers Diagnostics both directly and indirectly since 2010.

During this time, he has also been responsible for Western Europe and Northern Europe and he has served on the Global Management team. He is currently the Managing Director of Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Ltd, and aside from being on the board of BIVDA he is also part of the Academy of Medical Sciences forum advisory board.

John has worked in and around diagnostics for the last 25 years both in the IVD and technology consulting industries.

Starting his career in the diabetes industry he led a small team developing novel electrochemical glucose at Hypoguard and Arkray. He then joined PA initially as a biosensor expert and clinical lead for their spinout Exacsys, developing technologies to improve the accuracy of diagnostics devices.

During his 13 years at PA worked with many clients in the diagnostics industry, with a particular emphasis on start-ups helping in concept development, productization, trouble shooting, device strategy, and technology due diligence. Latterly he stepped up to help the national effort during the Covid-19 pandemic by taking the role as UK Government technical lead for the sovereign manufacture of lateral flow tests. 

After 13 years at PA Consulting, John returned to his first passion of start-ups by joining Early Health where he leads product development and commercialisation. As Early’s third employee his first job was build the product development roadmap and hire the team to fulfil it, along the way filling roles as stand in QA/RA officer, engineer and clinical lead, he is now responsible for the product delivery.  

Jane was recently Chief Marketing Officer at AMLo Biosciences, a spin-out from Newcastle University. AMLo was a rare female founded tech company with the exec team being all-women too. 

With over 30 years marketing experience in pharmaceuticals and latterly diagnostics, I hope to bring some of that experience to the BIVDA board.

I really want to help BIVDA provide support for the myriad of brilliant British innovations in our industry and help get the NHS, in particular, to find better ways to adopt innovation before small companies run out of money or look to other markets instead. I know from constant fundraising and budgeting how hard it is to succeed in the current environment. Together we will work better.

Country Leader Beckman Coulter Diagnostics UK&I

Aminur has worked in the healthcare industry since 2004 across the pharmaceutical, medical device, and diagnostic sectors. With experience in sales, strategic marketing, and market access, Aminur has a passion for accelerating value-based healthcare and population health which can shine a light on the true value of the diagnostic sector.

Aminur joined Beckman Coulter in June 2025 as Country Leader with the ambition to evolve the organisation, he wants Beckman Coulter to be seen as a healthcare company rather than a diagnostic company. Am sees BIVDA as a crucial partner to Diagnostic companies, developing a greater deeper understanding of the importance of investment to evolve the backbone of healthcare intervention which is diagnostic testing.

Director of Market Access and Operations

Prior to joining BIVDA, Beth was Medical and Surgical Consumables Director for NHS Supply Chain, leading the clinical and commercial team responsible for assurance of value and resilience for the supply of clinical goods to the NHS.

Beth brings broad and deep experience across the NHS Procurement landscape, gained over 25 years. As well as senior roles in the NHS, she has worked in industry, achieved Fellowship status with the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, held Governance positions with CIPS Congress and been an active member of the Healthcare Supplies Association.

Head of Regulatory Strategy 

Professor Mike Messenger is one of the UK’s most respected figures in the regulation of medical and in vitro diagnostics.

He is a visiting Professor at the University of Leeds and was formerly Head of Diagnostics at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led development of Target Product Profiles, supported government test validation groups, co-developed the CONDOR trial, and advised national and EU agencies.

His work with FIND and the 100-day mission aligns closely with some of BIVDA’s core programmes.

Mike established the Leeds Centre for Personalised Medicine and Health and the National Institute for Health Research NIHR Leeds In Vitro Diagnostic Co-operative. He served for 10 years on the NICE Diagnostic Advisory Committee and is currently a member of International Standards Organisation (ISO) TC 212 working groups 1, 3 & 4 and British Standards Institute (BSI) CH 212.

Head of Membership Engagement

With around 43 years’ experience within the IVD industry, Kaye brings a wealth of experience to BIVDA from the wide variety of roles she has held over that period.  Having worked in some of the larger global companies (Siemens, Beckman Coulter, Olympus and Fujirebio) in addition smaller SMEs and distributors, Kaye has a good understanding of how the needs of these companies may differ and how BIVDA can assist and tailor its support to meet these requirements.

Starting in an R&D role developing one of the first non-isotopic immunoassays, after 8 years, Kaye then moved into the commercial world holding a number of customer-facing positions. These included direct sales and business development, product support, customer training and system installations, together with solution design, marketing and product management. With a desire to work overseas, Kaye’s dream came true with the role of EMEA Marketing Manager for Fujirebio Europe which took Kaye to Belgium for nearly 4 years.

Policy and Public Affairs Executive

Ben is the Policy and Public Affairs Executive at BIVDA. Ben joined BIVDA in November 2021, after previously working as a Researcher in Parliament. He provides policy development, research, and briefings on policy and public affairs in order to support the strategic objectives of BIVDA and its members. After graduating from Royal Holloway, University of London with a BA Hons in History, Ben spent time working in the NHS and in local and national politics.

Operations Manager

Layla is the Operations Manager at BIVDA, having joined in April 2025. She has significant experience working in operational, office management and membership coordination roles, giving her great insight into the multi-faceted nature of a trade association and the importance of delivering on member requirements. Layla will be managing our office functions, including meeting room bookings, our finance processes, and assisting with working parties and events.

Sustainability Programme Lead

Sarah Joy is a qualified nurse in adult and pediatric care, with an additional 15 years of excelling as a sales representative in the medical device industry before becoming involved in compliance and tendering.

An experienced tender bid writer, internal ISO auditor, and Social Value Practitioner, Sarah Joy has become passionate about delivering meaningful sustainability in the industry. So is ideally placed to provide expertise and support in how to deliver and comply with the NHS and Public Procurement sustainability requirements around Net Zero and Social Value.

Innovation Programme Lead 

Lucy began her working life in the National Health Service where she trained as a Biomedical Scientist. It was here that she gained first hand insights into the importance of diagnostic testing in patient management and positive health outcomes

Fast forward nearly 25 years, and Lucy has spent her career in the commercial world of diagnostic testing holding leadership and people management roles in Product Management, Technical Marketing and Medical Affairs for Unilever, Abbott and LumiraDx.

Lucy now leads her own consultancy company, Lehane Consulting, providing her expert advice and guidance to support companies bringing new, innovative diagnostic products to market.

Regulatory Affairs Manager

Neil Plumridge has over 25 years experience in the IVD sector, both as an end user of IVDs, supporting Clinical Chemistry and POCT systems in the UK and Ireland, as well as working in and supporting IVD manufacturer in the UK, Germany and the US for global distribution. Neil was EKF Diagnostics Holdings Plc’s Global Regulatory Manager, collecting, sharing and implementing global IVD regulatory changes and best practice, before becoming a Regulatory Consultant – Insight IVD Ltd. 

Neil has been an active member of various BIVDA working parties including the Regulatory Affairs WP, and a member of MedTech Europe working parties including those cover the implementation of the EU Green – Environmental and Sustainability goals. BIVDA formed the Environmental WP, both to inform members of increasing change in chemicals and environmental legislation, but also since BREXIT to provide advocacy for the IVD sector to address changes occurring in UK legislation and to reach out to UK Agencies and provide insight to the how UK legislation impacts the sector.

Neil provides support and insight to BIVDA and it’s members regarding both IVD sectorial, and wider legislative compliance (Chemicals and Environmental) and changes impacting the IVD sector.

Head of NHS Policy

David joined BIVDA as Head of NHS Policy in December 2025.

David brings an exceptional track record of leadership and transformation across the NHS. Originally a nurse, he has since held senior roles across hospital, community, primary care and commissioning organisations, including serving as Chair and CEO of primary care alliances and receiving recognition as CCG Manager of the Year.

He has also directed major NHS transformation programmes and has been a long-standing advocate for the essential role of diagnostics and point-of-care testing in service improvement.

Alongside tis role, David is Transformation Director for the Well Up North Primary Care Network, one of the country’s leading examples of advanced neighbourhood and integrated working.

He also brings three decades of UK market access experience, having advised around 300 companies through consulting and leadership roles. David leads Health Policy Explained Limited and serves as a Trustee for Hospice Care North Northumberland.

His deep NHS insight, extensive networks and hands-on experience in diagnostic innovation will be invaluable in supporting BIVDA members through practical policy analysis, authentic advice and enhanced opportunities for collaboration with NHS organisations ready for genuine innovation adoption.

Laboratory Standards and Scientific Affairs Advisor

David has worked in pathology for over 40 years and has been involved in both public and private sector provision. He has been involved in many national pathology initiatives such as modernising scientific careers, MHRA POCT advisory and knowledge and skills framework. David was also a council member for the IBMS and chairs their science committee.

David is the current chair of the ISO TC 212 mirror committee and represents the UK on international standards worldwide, being heavily involved in writing the new ISO 15189 amongst others. David has been persuaded out of retirement to support BIVDA in this new role.

Scientific Lead

Dr Jayne Ellis is Co-Founder and Managing Partner in JEMMDx, a consultancy focussed on Diagnostics and FemTech.

Jayne has 25+ years of successful experience in the diagnostics industry having previously held key strategic roles including VP Medical and Clinical Affairs (LumiraDx), Director Womens’ Health Business Unit (Alere), Medical Director Western Europe (Alere) and Director New Business Development (Swiss Precision Diagnostics/Unipath/Unilever (Clearblue Brand)).

Jayne has led programmes resulting in the global launch of over 20 new to market products including several for infectious diseases, and innovations in women’s health and cardiometablic disease. She is passionate about diagnostics improving patient outcomes and has specific interest in infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) having led stakeholder projects on policy and advocacy for rapid testing ahead of antimicrobial prescribing (Straight to the Point and Testing Times).  She has a successful track record of developing market access including NHS and NICE engagement, KOL and NGO networks, parliamentary roundtables, presenting at international meetings and has over 50 scientific publications.
